Wildlife, you can’t expect such creatures to follow rules, such as using housing as it’s designed, nor to leave wires alone.
Nature, you can’t expect winds to not jostle structures.
So, what’s one to do? Well, make adjustments as needed.
Recently we found nest boxes that had been “modified” around the entries, most likely by woodpeckers. Not to worry, as we had additional boxes stored.
With that, we took two boxes and enlarged the openings to sizes more suited to woodpeckers. Didn’t take much time, so we quickly swapped them for damaged boxes.
Hopefully, the little “Peckers” will be happy with the changes.
Last year we had put up a Kestrel box, using a sliding barn door track as the pole. Rollers were used to mount the box, but the allowed it to swing in the wind. To take care of that, I installed 2×4 slider blocks. These seem to have taken care of the problem, as the box seemed steady in the North winds that came up the next day.
In any form of management, one has to adjust to the needs of what/who’s managed. Hopefully, we’re doing a good job. At least these adjustments can be checked on.
Hope everybody who celebrates Thanksgiving (USA) has a wonderful and safe holiday.
Until next time, Peace!
