NPAT: An Excellent Conservation Allie

Yesterday evening (Jan. 20, 2021) I had the opportunity to join in on a presentation (via Zoom) by the Fayette Prairie Chapter Of the Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT).

Yes.

You might be thinking prairies? What prairies? They are out there, although few and far between, remnants of grasslands that once stretched from Mid-Texas to Canada.

NPAT is working to preserve them, and many other pieces of native land, so that they can be enjoyed by mankind and wildlife, forever. The speaker for the presentation was David Bezanson, and he spoke about saving lands by placing them under conservation easements. It dosen’t always have to be Prairie land, so if you own land that has maybe been in your family for awhile, you may be interested.

Conservation easements set aside pieces of property to help keep development from happening on that piece of land. It may also help reduce the property taxes on that acreage. There are three entities that can help those interested, Native Prairies Association of Texas, The Nature Conservancy, and Texas Parks and Wildlife.

In the future the SnK Wildlife Reserve will belong to NPAT, because we have three eco regions that meet here on this piece of property, Black land Prairie, Post Oak Savanha, and Coastal Prairie. We feel that it’s important to protect land, when ever possible, and will do so with The SnK Wildlife Reserve.

We need our wild spaces and Mother Nature needs them for sure!
