Water for Wee Ones

When managing land for livestock, water is primarily provided for its use, with the expectation that some wildlife might also use it.

When managing land for wildlife, water is many times left for Mother Nature to provide, which at times might not be enough, and not in the right manner for the “Wee Ones,” such as frogs, toads, lizards, squirrels, butterflies, etc.

At The SnK, water was originally maintained for livestock, but now we also provide supplemental water in more varied manners.

The Guzzler in the back area is for birds and small life, which can get through the guard panels, to keep deer from drinking when they can travel to the main sources.

In addition to the guzzler, Selena has also installed a water trough, behind the house, for water vegetation and any life that might be able to use it.

Some of the newest sources of water are small dishes for birds, toads, butterflies, as mentioned above.

Here’s some pics of what’s been set up, and her write up, below them.

After discovering two small toads in a coffee can while planting my elephant ears in a tub for my water trough, I decided to do these small water/sand basins for them in various spots.

Toads eat many insects at night and are harmless, also butterflies will use these basins for puddling, they need moisture as well, so I took a couple pics of my toad basins.

No need to refill them every day and they wont attract mosquitoes this way either.
